Sylar - Golden Retreat

Genre: Metalcore
For Fans Of: Emmure, Beartooth, My Ticket Home

Sylar made a name for themselves, when they released their debut ep “Deadbeat”. They definitely keep the title of writing music that makes you want to get up off your feet and mosh. “Golden Retreat” is definitely a song that won’t disappoint a metalcore fan at all. It has everything that a good metalcore song needs. Good vocals, a heavy breakdown, and some hate filled lyrics done by a vocal style that fits. Now, I’m not going to really say Sylar is anything new, or original in the genre, but they’re definitely something that someone should be listening too if they’re a fan of metalcore. Sylar is a good addition to the metalcore family. They may not bring anything really new to the table, but they bring some heavy breakdowns to it. Sylar has matured a little bit from their ep, and you can easily hear just that in this song. I think they’ll end up maturing more, and become a pretty large band in this scene if they keep writing songs like this. Sylar is one of those bands that shows that metalcore isn't dead, nor will it die anytime soon.
Breakdown:
Screams: The vocals on this song are mainly screams or what can be considered screams. In some places there is growling, which is fairly common in metalcore now. Sylars screamer is definitely talented, and knows his screams pretty well. He also seems to try some stuff on this song that you didn't hear on the ep. Which is pretty good. It made the song a lot more interesting to listen too. To be completely honest, with the screams on this song though, in some places it kind of sounds like a grindcore vocal style, which isn't too bad to add. It was just something I didn't really expect it at first. It's definitely a good addition to the song, if anything.
Instruments: As I said about the vocal style, there are some places that kind of sound grindcore. The instrument play on this sounds a lot like it did on their ep, with some minor fixes, changes, and some new techniques here, and there. Overall, the instrument play is great, and it fits perfectly, even with some grindcore places. I can only hope they keep using different techniques and whatnot in newer music they later put out.
