The Vans Warped Tour 2013

The Vans Warped Tour has always been known as the “Best Day Ever” because of how many bands it brings in. About ninety, to one hundred bands preform on the tour. Vans Warped Tour also brings in some really cool sponsors, like Heart Support, Full Sail, Monster, Farm, Feed Our Children Now, Musicare, Spotify, Trojan, Air Force Reserve, and the Marines. Vans Warped Tour has always had its good, and it’s bad times. This year was probably a mix between good, and bad. The lineup was kind of meh. The main thing that I didn't like about this year was the fact that bands would be playing one half, two half’s, one day, two days, three days, or just not the whole tour. I know that the bands and the people who run Vans Warped Tour have no control over this, but I think you shouldn't let them play one show, or two. At least try to get them to play the whole thing, or none at all. I mean I was pretty bummed that The Aqua Bats weren't at my date. Other than that flaw, Vans Warped was pretty fun, and it was kind of neat to see some of the smaller bands that I like play there. I had a lot of fun! I met the guys in Secrets, who happen to be the absolute best people in the world. They were really nice, and just all together great guys. Other than Secrets, I met a lot of other band members, and took photos/talked to them. One member that I've been following for a while since his old band “That’s Outrageous”, and his new band “Woe Is Me”, is Doriano Magliano. It was nice seeing him, and somewhat getting to talk to him after so long. He sort of remembered me from the old days when he was in That’s Outrageous. If you’re a huge fan of bands, and you can’t really go to shows as much as you want too, or never have a ride to them, I definitely recommend hitting up The Vans Warped Tour. It’s nice, you’ll meet people that are just like you, and that like the same music as you, and people that are friendly… (well, most of them). Vans Warped Tour is definitely worth all the money that you’ll be spending on the tickets. Warped makes sure that the show is great for everyone, not just one person. Also, if you have an open-mind, then Warped is a pretty cool place to find new music, or new bands/smaller artists to listen to who trying to make it in today’s music business. Another thing that is pretty great is that every now and again, Vans Warped Tour will do some sort of a contest. Now, your chances might be very slim to win, but some of the prizes (Autographed cd, meet and greet, VIP tickets, free entry for life, get on the bands bus) are definitely worth trying to win! I mean you could get a few of them at local shows, but a free Vans Warped Tour entry, for life? That’s worth trying to win, as well as VIP tickets. I mean… who doesn't like being able to meet the bands on their bus? Press can’t have all the fun right?
Show Rating: 10/10
Bands That I Saw On The Kia Soul Stage:
Sliverstein
We Came As Romans
Blessthefall
Silverstein: Well, I didn't catch all of their set I caught maybe the last two, to three songs, and honestly, they didn't do that bad live. I’d recommend them to new fans who want to see a band that has some of the better clean vocals, and screams. There wasn’t really anything that made me dislike their set. However, I was somewhat upset that I didn’t get to catch it all.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals were very good! The vocalist definitely knows how to have a good stage presence, and definitely knows how to make it sound like he is in the studio.
Screams: The screamer was on point. Silverstein doesn’t have many heavy songs on their set list, but I did catch one of the older songs, and heavier songs. Then I left to go to see someone else. Vices, this song later become one that I was listening too on the way home.
Instruments: The instruments were also on point, you could hear everything perfectly from the hill (Where I was watching them from.) The guitarist had some cool moves going on.
Rating: 4/5
We Came As Romans: Well, I've watched a lot of live shows, and have seen them once before. We Came As Romans has improved a lot, and so has the clean vocalist with his vocals. Most of the live shows that I have seen the clean vocalist messes up, or hits a note wrong that he did in the studio. The clean vocalist is still a good vocalist though, and I was happy to see him improve a lot, along with the screamer.
Breakdown:
Cleans: As I said the clean vocalist has improved a lot from older shows and I definitely prefer them over when I saw them.
Screams: The screamer has improved as well, his vocals were more “moshable” I guess you could say. We Came As Romans is close to being the perfect band to see live no doubt.
Instruments: The instruments were loud on their first song “Hope” then kind of went down a notch or two, but not too low so you couldn't hear it.
Rating: 3/5
Blessthefall: This was the second time that I've seen Blessthefall, and they definitely did much better than last year. Their set never fails to impress me. They're definitely gotten better, and I’d have to admit that their new song “You Were A Crown But Your No King” was performed the best, and they may have hyped up their album with adding this song to their set. Hollow Bodies comes out August 20th, and I definitely recommend picking one of those bad boys up at Warped Tour (if they’re going to be selling them there) or Hot Topic or ITunes! It’ll be worth the money.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals have always been my favorite thing in Blessthefall. Just the way that they’re done is a bit different, and more enjoyable than any other band. The clean vocalist can also do a type of a low scream, with his clean vocals… and you know what that means… MOSH TIME!
Screams: The screamer has a very distinct type of scream, which is definitely something to get off your feet too, and something that is done very well live.
Instrument: The instruments were the same as We Came As Romans, they seemed to be turned down a notch after the first song. You could still hear them though, from far back.
Rating: 5/5
Bands That I Saw On The Kia Forte Stage:
The Summer Set
Chiodos
Black Veil Brides
The Summer Set: The Summer set wasn’t really my cup of tea, but they did have a pretty good set, and everyone in the band was full of energy, and ready to go on stage!
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals were on spot, and also some of the better ones with their pop genre. They also had a bigger turn out then I expected.
Instrument: The instrument play was pretty good, it seemed like they made one, or two minor mistakes.
3/5
Chiodos: I was pretty on edge about staying for these guys. I caught one, or two songs, and was pretty impressed with them. I caught their newest song “Expensive Conversations in Cheap Motels” which was done great.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals had this flow to them that was really enjoyable, in my opinion. But as I said, I was edgy on staying to watch their set. However, now I wish I was down in their pit, but they wouldn’t let me go down to see them.
Screams: when you heard the screams, you could tell that the screamer was a bit tired/worn out. That’s okay though because he still managed to put on a show with some good screams.
Instrument: The instrument play was SPOT on, and really matched the clean vocals.
Rating: 3/5
Black Veil Brides: Man… Black Veil Brides, a band that got a lot of hate… and I was always told that they weren’t worth seeing, or checking out… but those people told me wrong. They put on a pretty good set, and when the one guy (Don’t know his name by heart) pulled out a violin (or viola) and started playing it, it really made their set come alive!
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals sounded just like they did on their recent album. There was a few flaws here and there, but they were decent to say the least.
Screams: The screams, even though the vocalist was worn out, he still managed to scream perfectly with no edits (that I could hear) to improve them, or anything. It was really impressive to say the least, because bands that big usually backtrack, or have it playing in the background.
Instrument: Everything was good, a few flaws (maybe, it looked like it) (sound guy had an instrument to low). But the violin/viola part, I can just hope they do that on every tour that they play the song on.
Rating: 4/5
Bands That I Saw On The Tillys Stage:
Forever The Sickest Kids
New Years Day
Forever The Sickest Kids: Sadly, I caught one song from these guys, but I met one of them at their merch tent. The guy was super nice, and radical. However, the song I did catch was nicely done.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The cleans kind of reminded me of what they did sound like on the album, it looked like they had a nice stage presence as well. I wish I could have caught a bit more.
Instruments: The instruments sounded pretty good, Tilly’s stage had one of the better sound guys, which I liked. There wasn't many problems with them, I guess because the bands there didn't really need much.
Rating: 3/5
New Years Day: Man! I love New Years Day. They were spot on, and their vocalist looked lovely as always. She definitely puts on a show that fits their genre, which makes me happy since they’re somewhat of an old gothic band. A dying genre needs someone to up it, right? So why not New Years Day? They had a great live show for the two songs that I saw. I wish I could have met them all, I only got to meet one who was a guitarist.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals were done perfectly, the clean vocalist for a female has some of the better clean vocals, heck! She beats most of the males there (Sorry guys.) and I’m not just saying that because I like the band a lot. I truly mean it, everyone in the band is talented.
Screams: There wasn't that many screams, but there were some in “Angel Eyes”. Since Chris Motionless (Damn you Chris) couldn't be there, another member took over his part who oddly enough sounded quite like him.
Instruments: Instruments were SPOT on and highly enjoyable, you could mosh to it if you wanted too. Sadly though, there was no moshing, but my friend and I did a merry-go-round type of a thing… which ended with falling pretty damn hard. (It was hilarious if you were wondering, even I laughed.)

Bands That I Saw On The Monsters Stage
Woe Is Me
While She Sleeps
Letlive
The Amity Affliction
Like Moths To Flames
I See Stars
Upon A Burning Body
Attila
Woe Is Me: Woe Is Me was the first band playing at the Monster’s stage, and one of the first bands playing in general. I caught a good bit of their set, and moshed a bit during “I Told You Once”, and “Vengeance”. I also met Doriano, who I’ve known since his older band That’s Outrageous. His screams changed a lot, but overall their set was better than I expected.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals could use a bit more work, but they were still good and fit with the instrument play, and the screams which is somewhat of a rarity during live shows.
Screams: The screams have always been my favorite part of Woe Is Me, the screamer sounds great live and his vocals never wear out which is why they stand out a lot.
Instrument: The instrument play was a bit shady, but hey, they were the first band. Even with this issue, they managed to put on one hell of a show.
4/5
While She Sleeps: I only caught one song from these guys, but I did get to meet them all at their merch tent (funniest guys ever, got a signed poster and they did some artwork on it that they will never do again for anyone else).
Breakdown:
Cleans: There was some clean vocals here and there during their set, but it was more of the screams it seemed, I caught one song that had a bit of both.
Screams: The screams sounded brutally crazy, as always. I mean what else do you expect from While She Sleeps?
Instruments: The instruments sounded a bit differently and were better than Woe Is Me, the sound man was getting into gear!
3/5
Letlive: This was my first time seeing letlive, and their newest album “The Blackest Beautiful” was my first time listening to them in general. I was highly impressed and it sounded just like the album with a bit of sound differences. Their set wasn’t “life changing” but it did make me happy to be able to see them live, I can’t wait to go see them on their future tours.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals are mixed with the screams, but they were still done perfectly, and they mixed the two together perfectly.
Screams: The screams sounded just like the album, which was impressive and they pulled them off so well.
Instruments: Same with the clean vocals, and screams, they were pulled off perfectly and it made you feel like you were listening to the album a bit.
5/5
The Amity Affliction: These guys are another one of my favorite bands on the tour. Their set was missing their drummer (If I remember correctly, the drummer they had was from Glass Cloud.) their drummer had to be hospitalized (for something with a drum stick if I remember correctly.).
Cleans: The cleans were decently good, I didn’t expect something over the top from The Amity Affliction, but what I got was equally good, if not better than what I was expecting.
Screams: The screams were great, even though you could tell that the screamer was tired after two songs, and he started losing his vocals. That upset me a little. Other than that he did really well.
Instruments: The instrument play wasn’t “flawless”. The sound was a bit notchy, but they performed great, and tried to make it sound like it was like you were listening to them on the album.
Rating: 4/5
Like Moths To Flames: Yet another favorite on this stage, man Monster, you know how to pick your bands! Like Moths To Flames wasn’t anything “OMG AMAZING”, but they did their job and put on a good show, their bassist (I think) could work on his clean vocals a bit more. He does some good clean vocals, but he doesn’t keep with the flow, or have the range narrowed down to fit the songs. Other than that they were great.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The vocalist, and the bassist, both did a bit of clean vocals. The vocalist did a good job with his clean vocals even though he was also trying to do the screams. But the bassist, now I already knew how he sounds. I’ve watched their sets before, and he’s getting better. I expect him to grow and mature, and come with the clean vocals that will make you want to bounce.
Screams: The screamer who was also doing clean vocals, was trying to keep his breathe, and you could tell, he did a stunning job with it though. Their screamer has always, and I mean always, been a favorite of mine.
Instrument: The instruments were great as well. Everyone had it to where they had no sound issues, or anything. I wish the drumming was a bit louder though.
Rating: 4/5
I See Stars: Oh the infamous I See Stars, I caught only their new song “Violent Bounce”, but I did see them walking when Secrets was playing. I did say hi to one of them (The clean vocalist), or I think it was him, might have not been, but he seemed pretty cool.
Cleans: Now I only got to watch them play one song, but on that song, the clean vocals were pitchy. The sound guy was doing better, but I don’t know if the sound guy changes, or not. But I See Stars sound was good.
Screams: The screamer sounded good, and matched the clean vocalist flow a bit. It was highly enjoyable in my opinion, but could still use a bit of work with the stage presence.
Instruments: For a band that was adding electronic sound to metalcore music, and trying to have a unique sound, they didn’t fail to impress me with this. Both electronica, and metalcore elements were there.
Rating: 3/5
Upon A Burning Body: These guys were one of the most insane bands there. Their pit was literally insane, but it was in the right mind to be, right? They were one of the heavier bands on the stage, and they did a stunning job with everything. I also met their vocalist, who was one of the nicest guys that I’ve met from a deathcore band, in fully honesty.
Breakdown:
Cleans: There was a tiny bit of cleans, in the set where the screamer couldn’t do his screams he managed to do cleans until he could. Which didn’t take long, and I don’t think many people noticed it.
Screams: The Screams were the main thing, besides the tiny bit of cleans that he did. His screams made everyone bounce, and mosh like animals! And he managed to keep his screams going throughout the whole set, besides the times he needed to breathe.
Instruments: Instruments were anything but soft. They were mostly spine chilling, and they made your heart bounce. Some bands can do this with their instrument players, and this is one of those bands.
Rating: 5/5
Attila: The Hated, The Loved, The Insane, the one and only Attila. Attila closed the Monster stage, which was another good choice on Monster’s part. The vocalist of Attila had some fun on stage with kicking a ball that someone brought with them. His quotes “I’m going to kick this mothafuckin’ ball.” “Thank you security homie, you save me from that dangerous ball, who could have had a gun.” He definitely made their set a bit humorous. The crowd chanted for them to play “The Callout” and of course Attila didn't play it, because as far as I know, they weren't allowed to play it because of a band that is there, and because their manager didn't approve of the song in the first place. He just let it go. (not one hundred percent on this, just what I heard from people that know the band personally and know their manager personally). My main complaint with Attila, would have to be their signing and photo situation. I believe if you play a show with people that come to see your band, that you should at least meet a lot of them right? Or even hang out at your tent for a bit. They did it a way to where if you were the first one hundred there (not per person), you got a photo ticket. This was somewhat unfair. Other than that Attila was great!
Breakdown:
Cleans: These guys were another deathcore band that did a bit of cleans, and the vocalist talked to the crowd a little bit. The clean vocals he did were spot on, and fit very well with the sound of the band.
Screams: If you know Attila, you’d know their vocalist is known for his fast scream rappin’. And yes, he managed to pull these off perfectly at the show. Everytime they came up, he did them and went faster, and faster.
Instruments: I personally know their one guitarist (Nate), we've talked a few times, and I showed him my review on “About That Life”, which he enjoyed. Everything was perfect in the instrument section, drumming was loud, guitars tuned well, there was no notchy playing, and the bass was loud and clear.

Bands That I Saw On The Kevin Says Stage
Volumes
No Bragging Rights
Emily's Army
New Beat Fund
Secrets
Volumes: Now, I was RIGHT beside the speakers during their set, and my ear kind of popped during a few of their songs. One thing that I noticed that I was kind of expecting…, GUS! Yes, Gus came to our Warped date, and did a song. I haven’t seen him show up on any other date, besides mine. It really sucks that I missed Michael, and Gus at their tent. I really wanted to talk to them about some stuff; new music, new tours, and possibly get a picture with both of them together, and then with each one. I mean what are the chances that I’ll get to see see Volumes again? It would really be so awesome to get to see them again. They definitely had one of the most “stand out” sets, in my opinion. Another thing that happened during Volumes set that made me really happy was the fact that Hance Alligood did “Edge Of The Earth”, which was also their closing song.
Oh and also, this isn’t really relevant, but my girlfriend, Christie, thinks she saw Christopher Fronzak in the Volumes pit!
Breakdown:
Cleans: Volumes cleans were mostly done by Hance Alligood, but there were a few places where Michael, or Gus would do a part, and they pulled them off nicely.
Screams: Both of them did screams quite heavily, and they really tried to put on a good show together. And they just managed to do so! Which made me pretty happy to see. I left quite happy after their set.
Instruments: Their guitar tuning was down a few notches, which fit pretty well. It really made it sound like the album! Their drummer was insane as well!
5/5
No Bragging Rights: I only caught two, or three songs from these guys, but they managed to somewhat impress me during those two, or three songs, which is quite hard to do at a live show. I’d definitely see them again, if I could.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The vocalist who also did the screams, managed to hit some high notes when he was doing his clean vocals, which sounded pretty good.
Screams: The screams were rather growly, and deep. This was impressive, and the vocalist managed to pull them off during the whole set.
Instruments: The instruments sounded well, but a few parts sounded like they had a little feedback, it was hardly noticeable though.
4/5
Emily’s Army: This band is not my cup of tea whatsoever, but they sounded amazing, for their style of genre. I checked out their album later that night. I should have bought one, but sadly, I didn’t have the money for it.
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals were done by all three of the guitar players, each one had his own vocal style, which was somewhat impressive. All three styles made their songs fit their sound differently.
Instruments: In the back of the crowd, I could hear everything besides the drumming. I could hear it, but not too well. However, the set was still enjoyable!
3/5
New Beat Fund: Even though I really dislike the music they play, because the genre was never anything that stood out to me, New Beat Fund amazingly stood out to me, and made me stay in the front. (I was waiting for Secrets to get on, their set got delayed). I definitely liked New Beat Fund…Oddly. The one guitarist with blonde hair, looked at me a little bit weird…
Breakdown:
Cleans: The vocals were done by everyone, except the drummer in the band. They all had a flow and a style that was never used before, which impressed me a bit. They sounded like Sublime a little bit with their vocals.
Instruments: The instrument had a heavy reggae feel to them, which I didn’t really like, but they were really catchy.
Rating: 3/5
Secrets: Secrets was definitely a highlight of my night! I loved their set, and I loved the guys in Secrets. They have a personality that only a friendly band would have. The guitar player let me tag-a-long with him on the way to their tent, and we talked a bit about their new album “Fragile Figures” coming out July 23rd. I can’t really go in to deep with their new album, yet. But my review for it is coming up, and I’d have to say that the new vocalist will definitely leave you speechless when he sings live. He has a good stage presence, and his vocals are just insane. He reminded me of a band full of hateful energy, but Secrets has NO hate in them whatsoever. Secrets are one of those bands that may never make it “huge” (if they do I’ll be proud of them all.). But they definitely do care for their fans, and they put on a great show for their fans too! I definitely recommend picking up Fragile Figures, and catching them on their next tour to promote the album! The album is definitely worth it. You can listen to all the singles on YouTube, and pick up the album at a record store near you!
Breakdown:
Cleans: The clean vocals were exactly like the album; no edits, all raw talent. Which made me excited to see them even more live! I would say more about their clean vocals, but there isn’t really much to say. The clean vocalist pulls it off, and can hit a very high notes!
Screams: The screamer is new, but definitely put on a show! His stage presentation is downright sick! Literally, he moves around, and lets he crowd sing into the mic, and moshes, or hardcore dances on the stage to his own music. He just doesn’t stay still! I’m pretty glad Secrets picked up this guy, in fully honesty. Not saying the last one was terrible or anything, but they definitely made a good choice! Even though both vocalists sort of sound the same, one of them is just… better. You should already know who!
Instruments: The instrument plays were on point! Everyone was flawless in the band, and had a pretty swell stage presentation. Everything had a flow to it, and you could move to almost everything that was being played. Which was nice in my opinion!

Bands That I Saw On The Ernie Ball Stage.
Defending Cain
Camisado
Defending Crain: This was one of the first bands playing, and also a local band. I watched one, or two of their songs, and they sounded pretty good. I’m going to try to keep up with them, they did a good job at Warped Tour, and I want to see them play at one of their own shows.
Breakdown:
Cleans: I’m pretty sure the vocalist did a bit of clean vocals, not much, but a few parts of clean vocals.
Screams: The screams reminded me of Howard, from Killswitch Engaged.I don’t know why, but the style reminded me of him a little bit.
Instruments: The instrument play was good, and the sound man was warming up. Sadly, it sounded like there was a lot of feedback the first couple of songs.
Rating: 3/5
Camisado: This was another local band, and it was one that I actually knew a bit better. I know their vocalist, he was a swell dude, and so is almost everyone in Camisado. Their sets were always enjoyable when I saw them! I even watched their sets on YouTube, when I couldn’t go see them live.
Breakdown:
Cleans: There were more clean vocals than Defending Cain. I enjoy the clean vocalist’s range, he also does the screams, which is another huge plus.
Screams: The screams sort of sounded like they did on their EP’s and albums; not one hundred percent, but they were pretty close!
Instruments: The instrument play was a lot better than it was with the other bands, in my opinion. There was no feedback, and there was a bit more energy with their stage presentation.
Rating: 4/5
Bands That I Saw On The Acoustic Basement Stage:
Allison Weiss
Charlotte Sometime
Allison Weiss: I didn’t catch all of their set, but I got to watch a few minutes of it. I think in one of her songs, she had a nice voice, and it sounded good. I hope next year they don’t put people who I want to see acoustically near the other bands that I want to see, spread em’ out a bit!
Breakdown:
Cleans: Allison’s vocals aren’t new, or a bit different, but her style is new, and it stands out a bit when it comes to female vocalists, or at least it does in my opinion.
Instruments: The acoustic was great, it had a type of a flow that sounded great with the vocals. This stood out a bit to me.

Charlotte Sometimes: Charlotte was great on stage, and she definitely had fun! The guy she picked to do acoustic guitar was flawless. Charlotte is one of a kind, and she made her set full of energy, and made it stand out a little bit which impressed me. Even though she was doing an acoustic set, she had so much fun.
Cleans: Her vocals are one of a kind, and that isn’t an understatement at all. Charlotte is definitely talented, and she proves it with her sets, and with the way that she can move, yet still keep her range and stay on the right note!
Instruments: I can’t really say much about acoustic guitars, but the guy she picked didn’t mess up once, he memorized the whole thing, and definitely made it worth watching.

Bands That I Watched On The Spotify Stage:
Run Dmt
Mc Lars
Run Dmt: I don’t know how to review a dubsep honestly, since all their stuff is on their computer. Run Dmt had a small crowd, but his bass drops were great and had the crowd moving and dancing all around.
Breakdown:
Beat: The beats were good and you could definitely move to them. He seemed a bit out of place; the stage was by metalcore bands that kind of over-did his sound.
Rating: 3/5
Mc Lars: Mc Lars, was actually pretty good. His stage presentation was there, and you could feel it, which was pretty nice. He interacted with the crowd, and that’s a huge plus in my books.
Breakown:
Cleans: His vocals aren’t anything too “new”, but his style is nice, and he manage to keep his breath + style even when he’s moving all around.
Instruments: The instruments were good, and the computerized parts were neat to hear. Plus, the drummer was crazy so I do give him his props when it comes to something like that.

To end off the review, for no reason at all, here's a picture of Domo Kun! (Sadly, I missed this stage, but I heard all the bands from walking around. They all rocked!)
